REALTORS AGAINST REALTOR SPAM (RARS)

By Anthony Longo 22 01 2007 by Author

REALTOR SPAMOne of our blog buddies sent this to us yesterday in response to one of our Hate Spam Posts…..we are loving it!

Founded by FRANK B0RGES LL0SA in an attempt to bring Realtors together to try to reduce the annoying Realtor related spam that is flooding our inbox and cell phones.

 Here is how it works:

  • To define Realtor Spam. Is it one unsolicited email? Is it 3, or is it 10 or 100?
  • Shut down companies that illegally acquire 60,000 Realtor email addresses and sell them for $250 and claim that they are opt-in databases.
  • Work with companies that have our email addresses, and find solutions to safeguard our emails from spammers. There are solutions, it is just a matter of getting them implemented.
  • Teach RARS members and other Realtors how they can reduce their spam. And spam filters are NOT the solution.
  • Create a large enough group so taht we will be listened to. At this point the response by some has been “Not enough Realtors complain, so it is not a priority.” When in fact, Realtors ARE complaining, but they don’t know where to complain to.
  • To get the word out about RARS, but not via spam!
  • Visit http://www.realtorspam.org/ for more info!  and Thx Frank!!!

    Doug Quance (11:02:46) :

I had to install the BoxTrapper spam system on my website, as the spam would usually come in at the rate of 200 to more than 1000 every day.

Most of these spammers do not use real return addresses - and as such, they never see the return email my system sends them to be cleared to make it to my inbox.

It is freaking annoying, for sure.

And other agents sending me emails about their listings… GIVE ME A BREAK. I have the MLS… I don’t need your email!

[...] Found this post at condodomain: http://www.condodomain.com/blog/realtors-against-realtor-spam-rars/ In my personal opinion, if you get a lot of spam, you don’t have a good spam filter. No matter how many groups you start or complaints you make, spam is only going to get worse. Why, because you can make tons of money easily sending spam. Spam is now conducted by large international groups that compromise large number of computers and send millions of emails a day. 9 out of 10 emails are spam, up from 5 out of 10 only a couple years ago. So, Get yourself a spam filter There are free ones out there and most hosting services that provide webspace provide a little tool called spamassassin. And most network admins keep it up-to-date and blocking the spam. Problem is nobody ever knows about it. All the hosting that we sell for blogs, comes with a very good control panel, called cpanel. This control panel lets you configure email, spam blockers, forwards, etc… [...]

    Just stumbled upon this.

Thanks for the shout out. Our state association just hired a REALLY sharp guy that “gets it.” He sees that it is important for an association to not leak all the membership data, and emails, on the Internet.

So many associations have their database in an online public and spam crawlable system.

    Does yours do that?

    Frank
