this is a great technology preview - i’m amazed at the resolution! what kind of equipment is used to generate this panorama? the tile service is really slow compared to VE as you zoom more into the picture.
that said, i’m a bit reluctant to agree with your “bye bye Virtual Earth” comment until xRez proves they can:
1. scale to the size of the earth
2. give us multiple views of the same location
3. permit measurements on the pictures
4. create fully immersive 3D representations of the pictures
while many people may not be aware of it, MS is pouring a ton of resources into Virtual Earth to make it a highly realistic and accurate digital representation of the real earth on which to build an entirely new class of applications beyond the simple mashup. don’t put it down for the count quite yet!
